Southwestern University

“In May 2021, Southwestern University hosted two commencement ceremonies on one day. The first honored the Class of 2020, whom we were not able to recognize with an in-person celebration earlier due to the pandemic, and the second honored the Class of 2021. It was a treat to have Paula Boggs give the commencement address at both ceremonies. Her message was truly inspiring and uplifting—exactly what our graduates, their families, and the entire Southwestern community needed to hear after such a rough year. I’ve been a part of many commencement ceremonies and heard many speeches over the years. Hers was by far one of my favorites. ”

It was hosted by our Employee Resource Groups, as she embodies all 4 of the identities our groups represent-Black, queer, woman, and a veteran. Paula was able to eloquently speak to each facet of her identity and how each helped shape who she is today. It was refreshing to hear that throughout her career, she always focused on bringing her true authentic self and found the opportunity to celebrate the differences in everyone wherever she went. I wanted to thank you so much for agreeing to be a keynote speaker at our Rotary lnternational District 5030 annual Conference two weeks ago at the Tulalip. You absolutely had the group buzzing and laughing during your presentation and afterwards while socializing with the members. Our theme this year was Light Up Rotary and you certainly did just that! I had so many people come up to me after the conference and now over the past couple of weeks, thanking me for bringing you in to address the over 500 members who were in attendance. You made ME look good, and that’s not always an easy thing to do!! You are an amazing individual, and if ever there was one, you’re certainly a Renaissance Woman. You fit so comfortably within any group. Academic, military, corporate and then throw in the musical side of your life….you truly arean amazing person. Having shared just one evening/dinner with you, but with your warm, friendly personality, it was like we had been friends forever. You were the same way at the podium. Now that I know you live here in West Seattle, where I call home, I hope we’ll be able to keep that friendship growing. Paula…if you ever need a reference for a speaking engagement, please have whomever it is, get ahold of me….but I have a feeling you’re fast becoming a women in high demand on the speakers circuit, so that might not be necessary. Again, thank you for entertaining and inspiring us all.

Dear Paula,

On behalf of Aviva, the Aviva Women’s Network, the Insurance Supper Club, and all that attended on Tuesday evening, I would like to pass on our sincere thanks for a really outstanding and inspiring talk. I’ve had so much positive feedback on the evening – the energy in the room was palpable and you truly are an inspirational role model to all – women and men.

The points that really stood out for me (and that a number of others have mentioned) is how you dealt with failure, turning this into opportunity; and your model of leadership – a servant leader – not something I have heard discussed much in the corporate world before. You epitomise so much of the Aviva Values that Mark talked about – never rest – care more – create legacy – and it is evident that you thrive on these values.

It was a real pleasure to meet you and I hope our paths cross again.

Once again many thanks on behalf of all of us at Aviva and the Insurance Supper Club.

Peter Ku Business Dev / Attorney Paula is an amazing individual – smart, talented, hard-working, visionary, and extremely charming. Paula brought a new and exciting persona to the position of Starbucks General Counsel and has been impactful in a way that I have not seen a GC be impactful in my professional career. Paula has been an inspiration to so many people (myself included) and, despite her incredibly hectic schedule, finds time to reach out and be involved in any number of community, bar and minority outreach activities. I consider it an honor to have Paula not only as a valued professional colleague, but a friend as well.

Dell Eddie Dixon AGC, Global Sales & Operations I had the pleasure of working for Paula at Dell during a challenging but exciting time of tremendous growth for the company. Henry Garrana Partner at Garrana Tran, llp I had the privilege of working with and reporting to Paula while at Dell in her position as senior deputy general counsel. While Paula is not an expert in Intellectual Property (IP), her ability to understand and analyze the risk factors inherent in Dell’s IP strategy and subsequent support for the agreed to strategy were a great asset to me. Paula’s management responsibilities far exceeded IP and included many of the other legal functions at Dell. Her subsequent move to and success as Starbucks’ GC fully validated her skills, both legal and inter-personal. Not only did I have a wonderful and supportive boss, but I also made a great life-long friend.

Roy Perry Chairman and President at Prairie View A&M Foundation Paula Boggs’ impact on the Dell Home and Small Business team was inspiring! Paula provided consul and advice in a fashion unseen before. Paula executed her role as a ‘Business partner,” working with the team to develop solutions that maximized our opportunities while insuring we remained in compliance. Paula’s approach was to “understand what the business unit was attempting to execute, then working to define the boundaries within which, a solution could be implemented.” I found Paula to be an Executive that sought “win-win solutions” to move the business forward. A professional at all times, an enabler of excellence and a true business partner is how I view Paula. Paula Boggs has my full support and recommendation in any endeavor she pursues
